WHAT IS An Intra-Abdominal Infection?

An infection within the abdominal cavity typically arise because of inflammation or disruption of the gastrointestinal tract. Abdominal infections are usually polymicrobial and result in an intra-abdominal abscess or secondary peritonitis, which may be generalized or localized.



Signs and symptoms of an intra-abdominal infection can include:

  • Fever
  • Abdominal pain
  • Anorexia
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal fullness
  • Distension
  • Shock
  • Organ failure
